Mike Maxwell is an artist specialising in intaglio etching, drypoint, relief carving and the creation original printed images. He also works in charcoal and pencil, with a penchant for chiaroscuro.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he grew up in Kenya and later in South Africa where he developed an abiding interest in wildlife and began painting and drawing animals and birds from an early age.
“For those unfamiliar with intaglio work there are many people who assume that the word ‘print’ is something akin to using a printing machine or photocopier, so I try to impart an understanding of the notion of an ‘original etching print’ where each artwork is an individually crafted production, albeit from the same plate. Hence there are minor differences in each impression, depending on how the ink is applied and rubbed off, resulting in a unique piece each time the plate is used. The entire process is illustrated below.”
